WHAT IS SOLAR PV?

Photovoltaic Solar Energy (PV) is the primary system for solar power generation. Understanding this basic system is extremely important for the integration of alternative energy sources into everyday life. Photovoltaic solar energy can be used to generate electricity for outdoor solar lights and entire cities. Incorporating solar energy into the energy use of human society is an important part of many countries’ policies, not only is it sustainable, but it is also good for the environment.
The sun is a tremendous source of energy. While the earth receives energy through sunlight to make plants grow, converting light into usable electricity requires some technology. Photovoltaic power systems collect sunlight, convert it into energy and transmit it for human use.

Photovoltaic cell modules on homes

Generating solar energy requires a system called a photovoltaic cell (PV). PV cells have a surface with extra electrons and a second surface with electron-deficient positively charged atoms. As sunlight touches the PV cell and is absorbed, the extra electrons become active, pop off to the positively charged surface and create an electric current where the two planes meet. This current is the solar energy that can be used as electricity.
Photovoltaic cells can be arranged together to produce different sizes of electricity. Small arrangements, called modules, can be used in simple electronics and are very similar in form to batteries. Large photovoltaic cell arrays can be used to build solar arrays to produce large amounts of photovoltaic solar energy. Depending on the size of the array and the amount of sunlight, solar energy systems can produce enough electricity to meet the needs of homes, factories, and even cities.
